Ah, Valentine’s Day!
The classic Cupid, with a bow and arrow, trying to injure someone into love. I think that is how it works, right? Cupid shoots an arrow in your ass, and you fall in love with the next person you come into contact with? If that is how it truly works can you just imagine how many arrow shaped scars Larry King had in his ass before he died? Did you know that Larry was married eight times to seven different women? That’s right he married one woman twice. Playboy Bunny Alene Akins. Once from 1961-1963 and again from 1976-1972. I would like to think that Larry must have been quite a looker in his younger days but the only pictures I can ever find of him he looks at least 70 years old at minimum. Maybe he was born with gray hair and a scowl? Anyways, RIP Larry, you were certainly one of a kind.
Truth be told, I didn’t really want to do a Valentine’s Day cartoon but ultimately, I decided on doing one. You see, I release cartoons on Wednesday and Sunday every week. This coming Monday (tomorrow) happens to be Valentine’s Day...but today…..TODAY is the SUPER BOWL!
Now, I am a massive football fan. I love football and anything football related. From October until mid-February, you basically should never plan anything on a Sunday if you want me to attend it. Or Monday nights….or Thursday evenings. Heck, In January you can even add Saturday to the list when the playoffs hit. Sometimes I have to go to a function during a game, there is no way around it. That doesn’t mean I have to engage in the function though. I have a cell phone and I will be watching football whenever I can sneak out of view from the other guests for a bit. I will be half halfheartedly listening to stories, engaging in small talk and will be fully immersed on how and when I can get a little distance to check the scores. Especially if my team is playing. What is my team? Nice try...I am smarter than that. I know not to divulge such information on the internet while trying to build a following. Because no matter what team you like – to someone you are wrong. I don’t want to be wrong. I want to be friends. Though I will give you a hint….I do live in New England. Though I spent a lot of time in Nashville in the early 2000’s….and the only team I have ever seen play in person was at Heinz Field. So….who do I like?????? Clearly there is no way of knowing.
Anyways, I got sidetracked a bit there, sorry.
I tell you all this because I was going to deliver a football cartoon today, being Super Sunday and all, but the more I thought about it the more I figured that Valentine’s Day would be a better fit for this Sunday’s cartoon. As much as I love football that doesn't necessarily mean that my audience does. Now, if I was a syndicated cartoonist that was able to do this for a living full time, I simply would have done a football cartoon today and a Valentine’s Day cartoon tomorrow. Since I have a boring old 9-5 office job to pay the bills however, I had to make a decision. Ultimately, I chose Valentine’s Day over football, and I am now just realizing that I missed a golden opportunity to combine football and Valentine’s Day into one epic cartoon! Dammit! Oh well, there is always next year….
