I am a big fan of Dr. Seuss but not much of a fan of Graduation speeches.

Let me re-phrase that:

I am not a big fan of lazy Graduation speeches that are nothing more than someone (usually the principal) reading Dr. Seuss’ “Oh, The Places You Will Go!” I mean, come on! It is a great story and everything. But, it has become a bit cliche at this point.

I’m sure the first time a student or principal chose to read the story during their speech it was inspiring. But, here’s the thing. I work for a television station and every year we film and live stream the graduation ceremonies in our area. I have done 8 or 9 graduations over the years and heard “Oh, The Places You Will Go!” during at least 6 of them.

I have also heard many incredibly inspirational and moving speeches that have had me on the verge of tearing up a bit. Speeches that have had me reflect upon my own life and reminisce about all of the hope and wonder that I had at my own graduation. Nostalgia at its finest!

AND THEN……

Some dunderhead, that didn’t feel like spending more than three minutes on their speech, prints off Dr. Seuss’ words (or googles it on their phone) and goes and spoils everything. (The clever ones actually bring the book up to the podium to read from)

Sure, it always gets a great response from the crowd. It is, after all, a great piece of art. However, I feel like the audience only responds politely because of the circumstances. It’s familiar. That always helps. Like a band playing “Old Time Rock and Roll” at a bar gig. Will it get a great response from the crowd and get people dancing? Sure will! Is it unique and inspiring? Only if your name is Dr. Seuss.

Anyways…I will get off my high horse now. Who am I to criticize anyone’s graduation speech anyways?

That is today’s cartoon folks! Have a great rest of your weekend. I am off to brunch with my family. I figure it should only cost about $7,000 to fill my tank to make the 30-mile round trip. Wish me luck!

Cheers,

~tod
